South Texas Ranch Living is Slow but Steady

Y’all Slow Down

In the last decade, the internet has taken over our lives and made the world spin twice as fast. A bus crash can happen in Japan, and my smartphone would let me know immediately when it hits the news.  So much information, changing so fast.

And I don’t mind at all. In fact, I love typing away on my computer at the ranch, communicating with writers in New York, or vendors in Spain or programmers in India. It’s a new day, and it’s exciting!

Is Bucolic Contagious?

But here at the ranch, time has all but stopped. The cows, the horses, sunrise, sunset…it’s beautiful, and you have loads of time to think.

For a long time, with my writing, I wanted to be like the writers that I admired who lived in France, or England, or India…places that had depth, history and amazing cuisines. But, as I have so much time to think, I realized that my story right where I am had all that, in spades. Not many people get to see what I take for granted. Old time Texas ranching, without any fake buildings or set ups. This is all real. And very American.

The internet, with it’s hyper efficiency, and up to the millisecond immediacy is allowing me the opportunity to share my unhurried ranch lifestyle. Truthfully, our slooow pace here is plumb aggravating at times. But again, if I didn’t have all this time to think, then I would have much to tell you.

 

Even though I live in a yesteryear environment, I also live in the here-and-now epicenter of a major current national controversy. Living on the Mexican border, our ranch is part of an illegal immigration thoroughfare. We see immigrants everyday as they head northward. This is a food blog, and I promise I have no intention of turning my food writing into political commentary. Just know when you see my food shots, many times the background noise would be a Border Patrol chopper overhead.

So, I have to believe that I was put here to tell a story. I think I am at the right place, at the right time, of which, I have a lot.
