KW Ep 3 – Cooking Beans over Mesquite Fire

Published: Oct 13, 2019 · Modified: Oct 13, 2019

I made this video of cooking beans over a mesquite fire because making videos outdoors takes a lot of practice! Now that I think about it, so does making beans, but Lord knows I mastered the the skill of cooking beans long ago. I have been making beans my entire life. I don’t even remember my first pot!

Cooking Beans over a Mesquite Fire is fun!

I get a lot of questions about beans. Most people don’t know what kind of pot to use. I hear all sorts of recommendations for Instapots, or crock-pots, and those are all fine. But neither of those appliances work for me. I really just use a pot on the stove, very humdrum, I know.

My favorite is my clay pot from Spain, which are not on the market (sorry!) It gives a beautiful texture to the beans, delivering a soft, insulating heat that a metal pan can’t do. I always compare my clay pot to a jacuzzi for food! Here is a glaze-free bean pot that you might consider as an option.

Building a fire takes practice, but once you get the hang of it, its fun! I will admit, my trivet for this video is way too tall. However, it was the only trivet I had on hand. Your pot should only sit 1″-2″ (3-5cm) over a fire. Otherwise, the flames are too crazy, and an uncontrolled fire is really difficult to deal with. Frankly, you burn your arms, eyeballs, and anything that is attached to you. No bueno!

Pre-Cook Beans on Stove for Quicker Fire Time

I cheated a little bit and got these frijoles started on my kitchen stove, and then finished them over the fire. This technique is a great time saver if you are going to a cook out. The beans got a mesquite flavor, without long sessions of fire tending. Indoor kitchens were invented for a reason!!

Enjoy!
