Every year before the holidays, my grandmother would search for the freshest, largest Texas grown pecans she could find. She knew my grandfather loved Slow Roasted Butter Pecans. Day after day she would slow roast small batches until every one of her old, dented fruitcake tins were filled with these savory treats.
Slow Roasted Butter Pecans are easy to make!
I can still see him in his living room, sipping a gin and tonic or enjoying a cold beer as he watched the news in his ranch work khakis. A small pile of salted pecans would be piled next to his drink on a dimpled paper napkin.
The flavor of Slow Roasted Butter Pecans is so rich and flavorful that it seemed like my grandmother had some elaborate process for extracting all the flavor out of the pecans. But really, the process for making them couldn’t be more simple. If you can turn on the oven and stir, you have already mastered the skill set needed.
Rich, Slow Roasted Pecan Flavor
My only tweak to my grandmother’s recipe for Slow Roasted Butter Pecans is using Irish butter. Containing less water than conventional butter, Irish butter gives the pecans a richer, more buttery flavor. And you already know how I feel about butter! Yum!
You can also create your own variations on this recipe for Slow Roasted Butter Pecans by adding a seasoning mixture after the pecans are slow roasted. For Cajun Pecans, add 1 tbsp. (12g) of your favorite Cajun/Creole spice blend after the pecans are removed from the oven. Stir to combine well, and then allow the pecans to cool completely. Enjoy immediately or store in an air-tight container.
In addition to cocktail snacking, Slow Roasted Butter Pecans are great when sprinkled over a salad, added to vegetable dishes or used as a dessert topping. I especially like them in chicken salad sandwiches or chopped and added to my favorite Jalapeño Cheddar Biscuit recipe.

Slow Roasted Butter Pecans
- Prep Time: 2 minutes
- Cook Time: 60 minutes
- Total Time: 1 hour 2 minutes
- Yield: 1 lb. pecans 1x
2oz. butter, cut into cubes (57g)
1 lb whole pecans (500g)
1 tbsp. sea salt (12g)
Heat your oven to 250°F (121°C). Place the butter in a 9”x13” baking pan (23cm x 33cm) along with the pecans and salt. Place the pan in the oven and bake for 15 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven, stir to distribute the butter evenly throughout the pecans, and then return the pan to the oven. Repeat the baking and stirring every 15 minutes 3 more times for a total baking time of 1 hour.
After one full hour of baking, remove the pecans from the oven and allow to cool completely. Enjoy immediately or store in an air-tight container.
